How OpenAI Turned a Claw Machine Into a Booth Magnet at Engineer's World Fair
The Challenge
OpenAI's booth at Engineer's World Fair had to hold its own in front of one of the toughest audiences in tech: engineers who have seen every booth trick and skip most of them. The activation needed to pull that crowd in, reward real engagement instead of walk-up luck, and run for 5 straight show days at Moscone Center without demanding attention from the booth team.
Invisible North, the experiential agency producing the booth, needed a partner who could deliver a fully branded machine into a tight union load-in window and have it dialed in before doors opened.
The Solution
Badge-integrated access. Play was gated through QR scan, built to work with the event's badge scanning workflow. Attendees earned a turn by engaging with the booth, so the line was made of qualified visitors, not swag hunters. Every scan was a tracked interaction.
Custom prize load. The machine shipped with 70 bubble balls, the capsule format that puts every prize tier in play, from small branded items to top-shelf grabs, and reloads on the floor in minutes.
Turnkey logistics. Dock-to-dock shipping direct to Moscone Center, delivery 2 days ahead of opening for a tight union load-in window, and pickup after final close. A technician handled professional on-site setup, so the machine was tested and tuned before the show floor opened.
Built for the creative team. Branding templates and a touchscreen UI template were provided up front, so the machine wrap and on-screen experience matched the rest of the booth. The brand stayed the star; the machine was the stage.
The Results
The machine ran all 5 show days at one of the busiest convention venues in the country. Engineers scanned in, took the controls, and walked away from the OpenAI booth with a prize in hand and a reason to talk about it.
Want your brand to be the prize at your next show? The machine arrives wrapped in your brand, loaded with your prizes, and configured around your show flow, with professional setup available on site.
